Final piece of Bondi cycleway puzzle now in place

Waverley Council has announced the completion of the final section of the Bondi Junction Cycleway, which links Oxford Street, Syd Enfield Drive and Bondi Road to Centennial Park.

The 210 metre-section of cycleway along Oxford Street, west of St James Road is now operational and usage numbers have reached an all-time high with 7,500 weekly trips being taken, Council said in a statement.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos said the cycleway has transformed connections for cycling, walking and access to public transport in Sydney’s east.

“I am delighted that this project is now complete and allows people of all ages and abilities, including families, to hop on a bike and travel safely to their chosen destination. It also means fewer cars are on the road as people hop on their bikes instead of jumping into their cars,” Mayor Masselos said.

“Throughout this project, Council has been working closely with our local businesses to support their needs during construction and we really value these relationships.

“We know that a separated cycleway is best practice infrastructure, and we thank cyclists and pedestrians for taking the time to keep an eye out for each other along the route to help keep each other safe.”

The Bondi Junction Cycleway and Streetscape Upgrade is a priority project of the Council’s Complete Streets plan to enhance the vibrancy of the Bondi Junction CBD.

The project also aligns with Council’s vision to reduce car travel overall and help Council achieve its new community greenhouse gas emission target of net zero by 2035, as announced by Council in March this year.

The community has been invited to join Council representatives at the cycleway’s official opening on Thursday 9 March from 7am-9am on the corner of St James Road and Oxford Street, Bondi Junction.
