The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has welcomed a Federal Government’s decision to extend project construction timelines for Phases 1–3 of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program.
Councils now have until 30 June 2024 to complete works, providing an extra year on the LRCI construction timeframes, Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister, Catherine King, announced last week.
The LRCI program supports all Australian councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects in their region, creating jobs and long-lasting benefits for communities.
“Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the impacts of trade and material shortages and supply chain delays have weighed heavily on those working to complete crucial infrastructure projects – and our councils are no exception,” Minister King said.
“Many councils are also dealing with the impacts of recent flooding, particularly in regional, rural and remote areas – while others are still working to recover from other extreme weather events over the last 12 months.”
