Devonport council GM reappointed

Tasmania’s Devonport City Council has announced the reappointment of Matthew Atkins as General Manager for a further five-year term.

In a statement, the Council said Mr Atkins had been instrumental in guiding the city through significant growth, having joined the organisation as an executive in 2007 and serving as General Manager since 2019.

“Devonport City Council is becoming recognised as a leader both within the local government sector and more broadly and Matthew’s dedication and strategic vision have been crucial to this success,” Mayor Alison Jarman.

“We look forward to building upon the solid foundation established during his tenure.”

Mr Atkins said he enjoyed working with the current Mayor and Councillors and appreciated the support and opportunity to continue to lead the organisation.

“Council has led some significant change within the city with further ambitious plans for the future, which is exciting to be a part of,” he said.

“We have great people across our diverse organisation, and it is a privilege to continuing working with them to serve the community.”

Mr Atkins brings over two decades of local government experience, having previously served as Deputy General Manager at Devonport City Council and Director of Infrastructure at Burnie City Council.

Recognising the broadening role of local government and in line with contemporary practice, Mr Atkins’ title will change from General Manager to Chief Executive Officer from 1 January, the Council said.
