DELP to investigate Port Fairy landfill sites

Department of Environment Land Water & Planning (DELP) contractors are set to carry out investigative works at two former landfill sites on Port Fairy’s East Beach from next week.

The Department has engaged contractors to work at the two sites over the coming month.

Moyne Shire Council Mayor, Ian Smith said the works were being completed in conjunction with Council to determine the best way to manage the sites into the future.

“Coastal erosion has previously exposed waste at landfills and with storms and sea level rise, there is potential for further exposures,” Mayor Smith said.

“These geotechnical works will give Council and the Department a better idea of what is in the dunes and help determine the best long-term management for the site.”

Early works at the site will include slashing required for access followed by geotechnical and contaminated land drilling.
