Cumberland council answers call for DV phone support

Cumberland City Council is partnering with the DV Safe Phone initiative to donate 45 pre-loved mobile phones to victims of domestic and family violence.

DV Safe Phone collects, repairs and distributes free mobile phones to victims of domestic violence through a nationwide network of DV agencies, police stations, hospitals and safe houses.

The Council is also encouraging the community to get involved by donating their old mobile phones at the newly installed drop-off boxes located at Council’s Customer Service Centres in Merrylands and Auburn.

“This donation is a small step in the fight against domestic violence. Cumberland should be a place where everyone feels safe in their homes, but when that’s not the case, I hope one of these phones can be the difference in saving a life,” Mayor, Ola Hamed

“This is a serious issue and while difficult to talk about, it’s something Council is committed to addressing. We are taking every opportunity to ensure our community is supported and knows we are here to help.”

Perpetrators of domestic violence can often restrict access to phones, limiting connection with the outside world. By supplying a safe phone, victims are provided a clean break from violence, coercion and control, and a way to stay in contact with support organisations and with loved ones.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2.3 million (one in four) Australian women have experienced violence at the hands of an intimate partner. With 39 domestic violence-related murders reported in NSW in 2024, the need for action is more urgent than ever.

Cumberland Police Area Command’s Multicultural Community Liaison Officer, Bosa Jerkovic, helped officially launch the initiative with Cumberland Mayor Hamed.

“For domestic violence victims, a mobile phone isn’t just a device, it’s a lifeline. It provides access to emergency contacts, safety planning tools and a pathway to independence,” said Ms Jerkovic.
