Creativity sparks Brisbane Artforce awards

Some of Brisbane’s best-looking electrical boxes have been recognised in the latest Artforce Awards.

Now in its 26th year, the awards recognise the most outstanding murals that transform Brisbane’s electrical boxes into vibrant street art.

Nine winners from 84 entries were announced last night.

Lucia Laus was crowned Overall Winner for her Climbing Kangaroo design, honouring the strong culture of climbing sports at Kangaroo Point.

Maddie Field’s Ibis-zilla, a tribute to the ibis, won The Lord Mayor’s Award for best design.

The competition helps increase community participation in the arts, improve the look of our streets, and protect street infrastructure from vandalism, the Lord Mayor said.

“I’ve been so impressed by the creativity displayed and how these designs captured the heritage and incredible lifestyle of our city.”

“I would like to especially acknowledge Lucia Laus for her best overall design and Maddie Field for winning the Lord Mayor’s award.

Artforce is one of the many ways we’re supporting the arts community and ensuring Brisbane suburbs are the most vibrant places to live,” said Lord Mayor Schrinner.

The competition is open to groups and individuals regardless of their artistic experience, including children, families, schools, universities, and community groups.

Each design tells a story about the suburb where it’s located to promote the heritage and history of the area.

For the first time in Artforce Brisbane history, designs could be printed on digital wrapping for electrical boxes located too close to traffic to safely paint.
