Victoria’s Stonnington Council is one of 12 Councils working to implement a reusable nappy program to reduce waste to landfill.
The Best Practice Reusable Nappy Program – Feasibility Study, led by Monash Council, has been awarded up to $80,000 from Sustainability Victoria, through the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria Councils Fund. [AT1]
As food waste recycling ramps up, disposable nappies are now one of the most significant landfill issues.
Approximately two billion disposable nappies end up in Australian landfill each year. It can take up to 500 years for these disposables to break down.
The study will engage with families to understand any barriers to using reusable nappies.
The collaborative project allows sharing of costs and resources, increasing the likelihood of an ongoing program.
“We know our young families want to make more sustainable choices, but the ‘reality’ of nappies can make it hard to be a climate leader. This initiative will help make it easier for our families to make more positive and sustainable actions at home,” says City of Stonnington Mayor, Kate Hely.
The participating municipalities include Bayside City Council, [AT1] Glen Eira City Council, City of Greater Dandenong, Knox City Council, Maribyrnong City Council, Maroondah City Council, City of Monash, Moonee Valley City Council, Nillumbik Shire Council, Stonnington City Council and Yarra Ranges Council.
The study will recommend a best practice model to
- achieve waste reduction;
- assist and support parent;
- increase the circular economy;
- create the basis for behaviour change across Victoria.
