Council to consult on Bondi Pavilion amphitheatre options

Waverley Council has voted to consult with industry experts, local artists and other stakeholders about the establishment of a revamped amphitheatre at Bondi Pavilion.

The amphitheatre would be in the form of a landscaped performance space in the rear courtyard of the iconic beachside venue which Council is restoring and is set to reopen to the public later this year.

Council last month adopted a Mayoral Minute which calls for “an initial consultation with key stakeholders including industry experts, the Arts and Culture Committee and local practitioners, to determine a process for the investigation that will help identify best practice principles and background for the progression of the amphitheatre project”.

Mayor Masselos said the investigation would look at a “heritage sympathetic” amphitheatre landscape feature within the courtyard which will be a popular area for performances and for people to relax and recreate.

“An enclosed outdoor venue, the amphitheatre would offer a unique experience that would capture a quintessential Bondi experience under the stars,” said Mayor Masselos.

“Now that our restoration is nearing completion, the time has come to recommence investigations about the amphitheatre including heritage considerations, a business case for the performance space, a community consultation program and design and estimated costs.

“There’s a lot to consider and a lot of feedback to be gained, but we are keen to understand the details of this wonderful potential new performance space within the Pavilion.”

A report will be provided to Council detailing the outcomes of the initial consultation and an investigation plan, with the community to be kept updated.

The Council’s restoration includes:

  • An updated art gallery;
  • flexible cultural spaces including the new ‘Bondi Story Room’;
  • two dining venues (a restaurant and a café);
  • larger Pottery Studio including a second kiln;
  • new toilets, showers and a family and accessible bathroom and change space;
  • expansive refurbishments and upgrade to all the Pavilion’s unique existing rooms;
  • landscaped internal courtyard spaces;
  • new grand entrance to the north and creating additional east-west connections through the Pavilion;
  • better connection from Campbell Parade to the beachfront.
