Corangamite Shire Council has announced it will collect Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins on a weekly basis until the new year, as take-up rates for the service picks up.
The Council says the fortnightly collection of FOGO bins has doubled as gardens enter their peak growing season. The extra pickups are due to start on Monday 7 October and continue until Saturday 4 January.
“There will be a total of seven additional collections which will help our residents get their properties ready for the upcoming fire season,” said Council CEO, David Rae.
“There is a window of opportunity to thin out potential fuel loads as plants have a growth spurt after hibernating through winter, but before conditions get hot and dry.
“The increased growth now will dry out in summer so these extra collections are a great opportunity to get rid of overgrowth that could pose a risk to your home or your neighbours if there is a bushfire,” he said.
Green organic waste collected in the Corangamite shire is composted at the Naroghid Landfill and used in rehabilitation works at the site.
