Alpine Shire community members have been invited to identify suitable locations for new public electric vehicle chargers across the local government area.
As part of its commitment to supporting community transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles, Alpine Shire Council says it is expanding the current network of public electric vehicle (EV) chargers.
“To do so in a way that reflects community aspirations, Council invites community members to identify sites in Council-owned carparks and parking bays that would be appropriate to install public EV chargers,” the Council said in a statement.
The Council says the feedback will contribute to the preparation of licence conditions for commercial operations, ensuring that the feedback is considered alongside sites identified for commercial interest, feasibility, and viability.Â
Suitable sites, as identified through community feedback, will be included in a request for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified parties in 2026 to install, operate, and maintain new public EV chargers.
Mayor, Sarah Nicholas, said the expansion will see Alpine Shire contribute to the national transition towards emissions reduction in the transport sector.Â
“The Australia Government has stated that private vehicles account for 60% of transport emissions across Australia,” she said.
“By expanding our public EV charging network, we are proud to support both residents and visitors to recharge their vehicles in safe and reliable ways.”
Mayor Nicholas also said that community input was vital to ensuring that the network reflects community needs across Alpine Shire.Â
“While it is easy to identify sites for commercial interest, we want to ensure that our network also works for the benefit of community members who use our carparks and parking bays,” she said.
“Your feedback will help us rule out any problem sites to create a practical, connected network.
“Our aim is to ensure that all sites are accessible, minimise visual impact, and support fair parking and charger turnover.”
Contributions to the network can be made online by visiting Engage Alpine:Â https://engage.alpineshire.vic.gov.au/community-ev-charging-opportunities. The feedback period will close on Friday, 6 February.
