Coffs Harbour council floats changes to expenses policy

City of Coffs Harbour Council is proposing minor changes to its policy which governs expenses and facilities required by the Mayor and Councillors when undertaking their civic duties for the community.

The draft policy proposes increases in the allowances for Council members to attend conferences and to undertake professional development opportunities.

The adjustments are outlined in the draft Councillor Expenses and Facilities Policy, which is now on public exhibition for 28 days for feedback.

“The City also wishes to facilitate the development of a Professional Development Plan (PDP) for each Councillor,” said Acting Council General Manager, Andrew Beswick.

“The PDP is to be developed to cover the term of the Council, with an annual review. This will enable Councillors to plan their professional development over a four-year period, with the aim of maximising the benefit to the Council.”

Proposed changes to the draft policy include:

  • Travel expenses – change in the annual allowance for the Mayor from $9,000 to $11,000. The Council said the proposed change reflects increased flight costs and heightened representation of the City by the Mayor in Sydney;
  • Conference expenses – annual allowance increase from $2,000 to $3,000 for Mayor and Councillors (includes the cost of transport, accommodation and meals);
  • Councillor access to the City’s Fitness Passport Program (a discounted workplace health and fitness program);

“In reviewing the Policy, consideration was given to ensuring that the expenses and facilities provided to Councillors are sufficient to allow them to fulfil their civic duties as the elected representatives of the City,” Mr Beswick said.

People can view the draft policy and make a submission here. Submissions close on 22 July.
