City of Melville Council, community members and local clubs have gathered to celebrate the new clubrooms and changerooms at Len Shearer Reserve in Booragoon.
The Council held a Community Open Day on Sunday to celebrate open the $3.5 million new facility.
The new building includes a universal access toilet, umpires’ room and storage in line with the Council’s goal of providing multipurpose facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.
“It was so great to celebrate the $3.5 million new clubrooms and changerooms with our community at the Len Shearer Reserve Community Open Day,” said Mayor, Katy Mair.
“We recognise the importance of providing inclusive multipurpose facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles and wellbeing and it was great to see this space being activated and used.”
The Council received a combined $1.4 million from the WA Government for the refurbishment through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund ($1.2 million) and the Legacy Grants for Women’s National Premier Clubs ($200,000).
Local clubs, Melville Athletics Club and Murdoch University Melville Football Club have been using the facility since it opened in late 2025, with the Community Open Day held to bring the local community together to celebrate the new facilities and activate the space.
“The City is very appreciative of the WA Government’s contribution of $1.4 million to this project, via the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund and the Legacy Grants for Women’s National Premier Clubs,” said Mayor Mair.
“The City’s investment into this facility enhances Len Shearer Reserve and supports an increased demand from all sports for non-gender specific facilities catering for female participation in sport.”
The project is part of the Council’s Active Reserve Infrastructure Strategy and enhances an important local facility to meet the needs of female athletes and support the growth of local sporting clubs.
