Queensland’s Cassowary Coast has earned a prestigious ECO Destination Certification, recognising the region’s outstanding commitment to eco-tourism and sustainable tourism practices.
The certification places the Cassowary Coast amongst a select group of global destinations to have achieved the highest standards for environmental sustainability – an increasingly sought after feature from international tourists.
Awarded by Ecotourism Australia, the certification highlights the region’s dedication to preserving their unique natural assets while committing to reducing their environmental footprint, implementing eco-friendly practices and driving sustainability projects.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor, Teresa Millwood, reflected on the achievement, saying it was testament to the region’s dedication to conservation and responsible travel.
“It has been quite the journey to achieving ECO Destination Certification on the Cassowary Coast,” said Mayor Millwood.
“It’s a well-earned certification that highlights our commitment towards protecting our natural environment while promoting sustainable tourism.
“We thank the community and the Queensland Government for their support towards this achievement which recognises the region’s dedication to preserving our rainforests, beaches, and wildlife, ensuring they can be enjoyed responsibly for generations to come.”
Ecotourism Australia CEO, Ms Elissa Keenan said, “We are delighted to welcome the Cassowary Coast region to our growing cohort of ECO Certified Destinations throughout Australia.”
“This accomplishment highlights the region’s dedication to globally recognised sustainable tourism practices and strengthens its position as a leading ecotourism destination.
“The Cassowary Coast region holds immense ecological and cultural significance.
“By offering exceptional nature-based experiences, such as those offered by ECO Certified operators Paronella Park and Mamu Tropical Skywalk, and Sustainable Tourism Certified King Reef Resort the region is championing sustainable tourism that benefits both the community and visitors alike,” she said.
Queensland Minister for the Environment and Tourism, Andrew Powell said internationally recognised accreditations like the ECO Destination Certification were essential in positioning Queensland as a leader in sustainable tourism.
“As the travelling public grows more conscious of their environmental footprint, ecotourism certification has become a pathway for ensuring meaningful and sustainable travel experiences,” said Minister Powell.
“The Cassowary Coast’s new Certification assures holidaymakers that their choices support local communities, protect natural habitats and contribute to sustainable development.
“The Cassowary Coast is now one of 10 Queensland destinations to have received the ECO Destination Certification in what is a huge vote of confidence for the region.
“Recognition like this aligns with feedback received during our development of Destination 2045: Queensland’s Tourism Future, our long-term tourism strategy for the state.
“Funding through the Eco-certified Tourism Destination Program has been crucial in promoting Queensland as a top destination for eco-conscious travellers,” he said.
