Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor, Bilal El-Hayek says he is fed up with the “wanton destruction” of local sporting fields and public facilities caused by “gutless and reckless” vandals after a series of recent attacks.
In the past few weeks, the disabled toilet facility at Greenacre Splash Park has been left unusable for those with limited mobility thanks to the efforts of vandals. Council says the facility remains closed and in need of significant repair.
Meanwhile, the area’s brand new Deepwater Pump Track in Milperra has also been struck by e-bike vandals, as well as “thrill seekers” building artificial jumps that the Mayor says can cause serious injuries to riders and bystanders.
E-bike riders have torn up the fields at Gosling and Roberts Park. Thanks to the quick work from our open spaces and maintenance crew, sporting games have not had to be postponed or cancelled, the Council said in a statement.
For the toilets and pump track, the damage will take weeks and cost residents tens of thousands of dollars to repair.
“These acts of vandalism are an utter disgrace and those responsible should be ashamed,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“Our fields and recreational facilities are there for everyone to enjoy and this total disregard for our community has meant these facilities have to be temporarily closed for repair.
“To those committing this destruction, you are on notice and you will face the consequences if caught.”
