The highly contagious viral dog disease, Canine Parvovirus, has been detected in Lithgow.
In a statement, Lithgow City Council said the virus was a serious concern for the health of local pets.
“Recently young dogs infected with the virus have also been abandoned at the Lithgow Animal Shelter,” the Council said.
“To ensure the safety of animals already housed at the shelter, and attending staff, Council will be temporarily closing the facility to implement specific hygiene and quarantine measures.”
The Lithgow Animal Shelter will not be receiving animals until further notice.
Symptoms of Canine Parvovirus include lethargy, severe vomiting, loss of appetite, and bloody diarrhea.
“If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, please contact your local vet immediately,” the Council said.
“Let’s work together to keep our community and our pets safe.”
