Councils across NSW have until 16 June to submit their bids for recognition at the annual Local Government Week Awards for 2022.
Minister for Local Government, Wendy Tuckerman said the awards, presented by Local Government NSW, were a great opportunity to celebrate and showcase council achievements and contributions.
“Councils play a vital role in the everyday lives of the people of NSW, usually with little fanfare,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
“These awards recognise excellence in local government, which is on display every day in the services and facilities our state’s councils provide for their communities.”
She said that 128 local councils in NSW invest more than $12 billion in services, facilities and infrastructure each year and support more than 48,000 jobs in cities and towns across the state.
They also maintain more than 109,000 hectares of open space and manage over 167,000 kilometres of roads, as well as providing 471 public pools and 1786 public halls to local communities.
“I’m very proud of the work our councils do to support our state’s communities and I want to see it celebrated. I encourage all councils to apply, and shine a light on the wonderful work they do,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
Nominations are now open in a number of categories for the Local Government Week Awards. Applications can be made via the Local Government NSW website and close on Thursday 16 June. The Awards will be presented during Local Government Week at a ceremony in Sydney on 4 August.
The categories open for submission are:
- The RH Dougherty Awards for innovation in communication and events;
- The Leo Kelly OAM Arts and Culture Awards;
- The LGNSW Planning Awards sponsored by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, and
- The Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) NSW Youth Week Awards.
Local Government Week runs from Monday 1 August to Sunday 7 August.
