Almost 80,000 outdated general waste wheelie bin lids will be replaced starting next month, Brisbane City Council has confirmed.
There are currently three different coloured lids on general waste wheelie bins in Brisbane – dark green, grey and red.
Kerbside wheelie bins were introduced in Brisbane in 1984 with the red top lids introduced in 2011. Around 17% of bins still have a dark green or dark grey lid. From 1 April, an estimated 77,000 outdated general waste bin lids will be replaced with a red lid.
The bin lid changeover project is being 100% funded by the Queensland Government. Consistency in bin lid colours is also part of the Australian Government’s National Kerbside Collections Roadmap.
The Council says consistency in colours will increase visibility for drivers completing collection and deliver efficient collections for residents.

“We collect waste in a city of 1.2 million people and having consistently coloured bins across our suburbs will improve visibility and efficiency,” said City Standards Chair, Councillor Sarah Hutton.
“We’re committed to effective and affordable waste management to keep our growing city clean and sustainable.
“This program will ensure all kerbside wheelie bins are red which will make bin collection easier and more efficient for everyone.
“This change will be at no cost or inconvenience to residents with the older lids to be changed over as part of normal bin collection.”
Removed old lids will be melted down to produce new bins.
Residents with a dark green of grey bin lid will have their lid replaced with a new red lid while their bin is on the kerb as part of their regular collection day.
The lid changeover project will run from 1 April until the end of June.
