Brisbane City Council is set to trial a free inner-city bus route to help residents and visitors travel around Brisbane as construction gets underway on major projects in the city.
Civic Cabinet Chair for Transport, Ryan Murphy said the new South Brisbane Bus Loop trial was due to start by early 2023 and would service key residential, commercial and entertainment precincts.
“As construction on some big and exciting projects, including Brisbane Metro, ramp up it’s important we continue to make it easy for people to get around,” Cr Murphy said.
“In South Brisbane, there will be major Brisbane Metro works at the Cultural Centre Precinct along with ongoing work on other projects, including Cross River Rail and a number of residential and commercial buildings.
“We will be introducing a 12-month bus trial during the peak of construction works in this area that will service 15 stops across Tribune Street, Grey Street and Montague Road in South Brisbane.
“Throughout this trial we will be able to mainly use existing bus stops but will also deliver five new bus stops so the service can be more easily accessed.
“I think residents will be excited to jump on board this new service next year and will be thrilled that not only will it run every 10, but it will also be free.”
It will be a 12-month trial during the major construction phase of the state-of-the-art Brisbane Metro project, after which time its effectiveness will be assessed by Council.
“The Schrinner Council is investing $671 million in the transport network this financial year alone, from the major Brisbane Metro to local bus loops, every single dollar invested is making it easier for people to get around,” said Cr Murphy.
