Brisbane City Council has launched the city’s first-ever KangaCat, which is officially joining the CityCat fleet ahead of the six-year countdown to the 2032 Olympics.
The KangaCat has been inspired by the Australian Olympic Team’s iconic boxing kangaroo, ‘BK’, and celebrates Australia’s Olympic heroes and those dreaming of joining them in 2032.
“The KangaCat brings the Olympic spirit to our river ahead of Brisbane’s official six-year countdown to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
“In 2032, the athletes will put on the show and Brisbane will be their stage. As an Olympic Host City, we’re making sure Brisbane is ready to welcome the world and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
“Our CityCats are already one of the best ways to experience Brisbane and the KangaCat gives people another reason to jump on board for 50 cents.
“Hosting the Games is about much more than four weeks of sport. It’s about better transport, stronger communities, more opportunity and a lasting legacy for Australia’s lifestyle capital.”
Preparations for Brisbane 2032 continue to gather pace, with the Australian Olympic Committee’s Brisbane-based staff now established in an office alongside Brisbane City Council’s Host City Team at Brisbane Square.
Australian Olympic Committee CEO, Mark Arbib said having the Olympic team’s mascot ‘BK’ cruising the river was a wonderful symbol of Brisbane’s place as Australia’s next Olympic Host City.
“In two years’ time when the LA28 Games end, the world’s attention will shift toward Australia and Brisbane 2032,” he said.
“Australia’s Olympians are Australia’s most popular sporting team and the boxing kangaroo is their mascot. BK never gives up or gives in, that speaks to the qualities of our athletes.
“I thank Lord Mayor Schrinner for his partnership in launching this ‘BK’ KangaCat, and I look forward to further collaboration around Brisbane’s Games legacy initiatives in the years ahead.”

“The Boxing Kangaroo is a powerful symbol of Australian sport recognised worldwide, and its presence on the Brisbane River will be a daily reminder to our athletes, residents and visitors alike of the excitement ahead as they prepare for our home Games.”

A record 6.8 million passengers jumped on board Brisbane ferries last financial, connecting residents and visitors to some of the city’s best attractions, dining precincts and riverside destinations.
