Brisbane Metro celebrates three million rides

Brisbane Metro has hit a major milestone, with more than three million trips taken across on the city’s new bus rapid transit service.

The achievement comes less than eight months after the M2 service launched on 28 January and just three months since the M1 service began operating on 30 June:

  • M1 total trips since launch: 468,155
  • M2 total trips since launch: 2,566,855
  • M1 & M2 combined total trips since launch: 3,035,010

Brisbane Metro and the new bus network are already transforming how residents move around the city, said Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“Brisbane Metro is a game-changer for our city, with more than three million journeys already taken in just a matter of months,” said the Lord Mayor.

“More than 600 people are moving to Brisbane every week and this is the kind of high-frequency, high-capacity service that Brisbane needs as it continues to grow.

“We’re not just building a better bus network, we’re building a mass transit system for a growing global city.

“We’re providing more choice, more reliability and more reasons for people to leave their cars behind so we can ease congestion on our roads.”

The M1 and M2 services are expected to boost public transport capacity by up to 30 million additional seats by 2031.

The Lord Mayor said congestion on Victoria Bridge has dropped by 30% since Brisbane’s New Bus Network launched in June. Further improvements are expected when the Adelaide Street tunnel opens later this year.

Once the tunnel is operational, more than 1390 bus and Metro trips will travel underground each day, offering faster, more direct and more reliable connections between Brisbane’s southern and northern suburbs.

Brisbane Metro and the new network have laid the groundwork for future stages of turn-up-and-go bus rapid transit, with the Queensland Government already flagging plans to expand the service in their Brisbane 2032 Delivery Plan.

“Brisbane residents are clearly embracing this new era of mass transit, which will help us keep Brisbane moving today, during the Games and beyond,” said Lord Mayor Schrinner.
