Brisbane City Council’s Sun Safe Suburban Playground Program has hit a major milestone with the installation of the 50th shade sail.
Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner said under the three-year program, Council will ensure every playground in Brisbane has access to shade.
“Brisbane is Australia’s lifestyle capital thanks to our incredible climate and clean and green city,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.
“However, it’s critical that we protect ourselves and our children from the sun.
“Our program to ensure every single Brisbane playground has shade isn’t just about making them cooler, it could help save lives.
“More shade at playgrounds also means more opportunities for parents and carers to take the kids outside to play, particularly during the hotter summer months.
“Not only has Council been able to gear up quickly to get extra shade over 50 playgrounds, we’ve been able to achieve this by utilising local business.”
The 50th shade sail was completed at Fernwood Crescent Park at Taigum.
On average, Council was retrofitting shade to 10 playgrounds a year prior to the introduction of the program last year.
Under the three-year $10 million program, an estimated 150 playgrounds are expected to receive shade cover for the first time.
“Each year, skin cancer accounts for the largest number of cancer diagnoses in Queensland, which is why it is imperative that residents across Brisbane have access to shade,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.
“Even in winter we must be vigilant in protecting ourselves and our children from prolonged sun exposure.
“No child likes to play on hot playground equipment and more shade sails mean more opportunities to get outside and enjoy our fantastic playgrounds.”
The Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds program is part of the ongoing investment in new and improved parks and greenspaces right across Brisbane.
