Brisbane calls for aspiring multicultural business leaders

A Brisbane-wide call to find the city’s most aspiring multicultural business leaders has begun with the 2023 Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Business Scholarship Program now open.

Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner said the program provides a great opportunity for current or future multicultural business owners to grow their skills and better their business models.

“Brisbane is the most small-business friendly city in Australia and we want to encourage residents from all backgrounds to do business here,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.

“With nearly a third of our residents born overseas, multiculturalism and the business acumen of our residents is one of our city’s greatest strengths.

“This business scholarship program is a fantastic way for up-and-coming business leaders with a multicultural background to gain invaluable training opportunities and to take their business aspirations to the next level.”

Since the program began in 2008, nearly 600 scholarships have been delivered, to upskill and train many members of Brisbane’s multicultural communities.

In this latest round, more than 80 scholarship placements will be awarded across a range of Brisbane businesses.

Scholarship recipients will take part in one-day workshops, diplomas, degrees, masters and governance courses, giving multicultural residents the knowledge and skills they need to establish or grow a business at any stage.

“Council will continue to support our local multicultural business community through a range of schemes and initiatives including the International Internship Program, the Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Awards for Business, the Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Business Dinner and Awards, the Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Round Table and the Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum,” Lord Mayor Schrinner said.

“With COVID-19 and then a devastating flood last year, it’s been a tough few years for all business owners, and now more than ever, it’s important we continue to support local businesses through practical programs and initiatives.

“We remain committed to working with business owners, residents and the local community as we focus on creating new opportunities that chart a clear path to ensuring our city continues to grow.”
