Brisbane begins citywide green bin rollout

Brisbane City Council’s citywide rollout of green waste recycling bins to every eligible household has officially begun.

Green waste recycling bins are being delivered to eligible households in 11 suburbs this week, with up to 160,000 green bins set to be delivered across Brisbane over the next four months.

The rollout is part of the 2025–26 Budget initiative to expand green waste recycling and reduce landfill across our suburbs. As part of the initiative, renters are now eligible to receive a green bin, and those who already compost or manage green waste differently can still opt out.

There are already 170,000 green bins in use in Brisbane – or around 50% of eligible households.

Almost 230,000 tonnes of green waste have been recycled via green bin collections since 2019-20.

The Council says the citywide green bin rollout has the potential to divert between 65,000 and 80,000 tonnes of green waste a year.

It will also save ratepayers between $2 million and $3 million in the first year, and up to $32 million over five years as it will help offset the rising cost of the former State Government’s waste levy bin tax, said Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“We’re thrilled to see this important rollout begin, helping Brisbane households reduce waste and recycle more effectively,” said the Lord Mayor.

“Every green bin collected means less landfill, more mulch and compost for reuse, and big savings for residents thanks to lower waste levy costs.

“This rollout builds on our strong track record of sustainability and supports residents doing the right thing for the environment.

“We’re proud to deliver on our commitment to keep Brisbane clean and sustainable while supporting households through cost-of-living pressures.

“Our focus remains on reducing waste, saving money, and making Brisbane Australia’s most sustainable capital city.”

As part of the rollout, the Waste Utility Charge has been replaced with a Universal Waste Charge. Residents who already have a green bin will have no extra costs, while other households will pay an extra $49.52 a year, with a significant proportion of this attributed to the former State Government’s landfill waste levy.

The supply of green bins has been funded by the State Government’s Grow FOGO fund, although ongoing collection and processing remains the responsibility of Council.

Council says the rollout will continue until December, reaching all eligible homes across the city. Any schedule changes will be published on Council’s website as they occur.
