Brisbane Beams Road upgrade hits halfway mark

Upgrade works to improve safety on one of Brisbane’s busiest northside corridors have reached the halfway point.

The upgrade of Beams Road between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road will ease congestion along the major arterial route, which carries around 20,000 vehicles daily, while improving safety and connectivity for pedestrians and bike riders.

“We’re delivering a major upgrade for Brisbane’s north, with the Beams Road project now halfway complete,” said Brisbane Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner.

“We want to help people get around our city sooner and safer which is why we’re building better roads like Beams Road to keep Brisbane moving.”

Works over recent months have focused on major underground drainage and service relocations.

Construction is now complete on widening the Cabbage Tree Creek crossing to support four lanes of traffic and address a known congestion constraint along the corridor.

A large crane with a 500-tonne lifting capacity was used to install precast culverts required to carry the additional lanes across the creek.

The project also includes new shared paths and a pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Tree Creek, providing a safer, separated crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as linking directly into the Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway.

“This major upgrade is great news for our local community, helping ease congestion and making everyday trips quicker and less stressful for residents,” said Bracken Ridge Ward Councillor, Sandy Landers.

“It’s fantastic to see this project taking shape, with real progress being made to support our growing community and keep Brisbane moving for years to come.”

The first stage of the Beams Road upgrade, between Lacey Road and Balcara Avenue, was completed in early 2025 and included new traffic signals at Dorville Road, widened road sections and improved shared path connections.

The Beams Road upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government, which has committed $50 million, and Brisbane City Council under its Better Roads for Brisbane program.

“Reaching the halfway mark on the Beams Road upgrade is an exciting milestone for this project that will improve safety, boost capacity and ease congestion for Brisbane’s northside,” said Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King.

“Alongside other major road projects across Brisbane, this upgrade is improving connectivity, reducing congestion and supporting the city’s continued growth.”
