Plans to revitalise the heart of Blaxland are moving closer to construction, with designs for the Blaxland Town Centre Activation project now in final review and preparations underway to go to tender, Blue Mountains City Council has confirmed.
The project is set to deliver significant public domain upgrades in and around the Station Street pedestrian mall, creating a more vibrant, accessible and welcoming town centre for the Blaxland community.
Mayor, Mark Greenhill said the design has been shaped through extensive community consultation, ensuring the upgraded space reflects local needs and supports social connection, accessibility and everyday use.
“Council is currently finalising the request for tender for major civil, landscape and lighting works, with the appointment of a contractor and commencement of construction targeted for April 2026,” Mayor Greenhill said.
“Planned improvements include new paving and pedestrian upgrades, improved lighting and seating, tree planting and landscaping, enhanced accessible parking near Station Mall, upgraded signage, and the installation of public art.”
An Expression of Interest process for public art has recently closed, with local artists Illuminart Daniel Walton and Tyswan Slater commissioned to develop artworks for the pedestrian mall.
Construction for the Blaxland Town Centre upgrade is scheduled to run from April 2026 to February 2027.
To support the community and local traders during construction, Council will host weekly drop-in information sessions at Blaxland Library throughout the construction period, providing updates on progress, timelines and upcoming works.
Council was awarded funding via the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program to deliver the improvements at Blaxland. This is in addition to funding for improvements at Katoomba, Glenbrook, and Hazelbrook.
The upgrade project is phase one in the delivery of the Blaxland Masterplan, which was adopted by Council in 2024, following extensive community consultation.
Work is underway on planning for phase two which involves redevelopment of the IGA supermarket and car park and will include underground parking and a new piazza-style town square.
