City of Perth Council has approved a $150,000 sponsorship grant in a bid to see WA Day celebrations brought back into the city’s CBD.
Event organiser, Celebrate WA, had sought $500,000 from Council to move the $2.6 million dollar event from Burswood.
Celebrate WA board member Fiona Kalaf told the special council meeting last night that the $150,000 on offer was not enough, saying the costs of operating in the city were higher than in Burswood due to traffic management and other complexities.
The event is set to run on June 6 and 7.
If the funding is accepted by Celebrate WA, it will be the first time the City has financially supported the festival.
The event was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
