Benalla releases draft climate strategy

Benalla Rural City Council has released its Draft Climate and Environment Strategy 2024-2029 for public exhibition.

The Council says the Strategy outlines a proactive and strategic approach to environment and climate change and identifies priorities for management for Benalla Rural
City over the next five years.

It is designed to be realistic, achievable, and adaptable to evolving technologies and resources, said Mayor, Danny Claridge.

“This draft strategy is a crucial step forward in our commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability within our community. It outlines the guiding principles and objectives that will shape our approach over the next five years,” said Mayor Claridge.

He said the Strategy aims to align with the carbon reduction goals established by the Victorian and Federal Governments. The Victorian Government has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2045, placing significant responsibilities on local councils to promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability while addressing climate change risks.

“It details the specific actions we will take to mitigate environmental impacts from our operations and to support the broader community in adopting sustainable practices.”

Council is inviting community members to review the draft strategy and provide their input
online by visiting www.haveyoursay.benalla.vic.gov.au. Submissions will close at 9am Thursday 27 June.
