Bega Valley Shire Council and its waste collection contractor, Cleanaway will soon undertake a randomised audit of household bin contents within the shire.
The audit is part of Council’s ongoing efforts to monitor and improve waste disposal and recycling practices within the community.
Waste Strategy Coordinator, Tim Cook said the audit is conducted every 2 – 3 years to track how residents manage their waste and recycling.
“During the audit, some residents may notice contractors examining the contents of their bins towards the end of June,” Mr Cook said.
“Bin inspections will be conducted on the same day they are emptied at the roadside.
“A sample of 520 bins will be randomly selected across the shire, ensuring a representative snapshot of our community’s waste management habits.”
Mr Cook said no action will be taken if bins are found to contain incorrect items, but Council will offer bin usage advice if repeat or major bin contamination is detected using in-truck cameras on other occasions.
“The data gathered from the audit will inform our strategic approach to managing waste and resources, enabling us to better target waste education efforts.”
“Ultimately, this initiative aims to enhance landfill avoidance and improve overall environmental outcomes for our community,” he said.
