Bathurst takes home five Tidy Towns gongs

Bathurst took home an impressive five awards at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2024 Tidy Towns Awards, announced on Saturday.

Bathurst Regional Council received two wins, for its Building Momentum Towards Net Zero program in the ‘Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation’ category and Sustainable Scallywags taking home a win in the “Young Legends” category.

Council additionally received two Highly Commended awards for its Machattie Lane Ecological Greenspace initiative in the ‘Liveable Towns’ category, and, in partnership with NetWaste, for the Bathurst Waste 2 Art initiative in the ‘Waste Avoidance’ category.

Bathurst’s fifth award went to local Geoff Windsor (pictured) in the ‘Local Heroes’ category for his excellent efforts in native horticulture and community volunteering. Over the past four decades, Geoff and his late wife Judy have grown over 300,000 native plants for the local environment.

Mayor, Robert Taylor congratulated the town on such an impressive result over the weekend, marking the wins as extra significant with the ceremony being held in Bathurst.

“What a brilliant result for Bathurst. Well done to everyone involved in our wins over the weekend,” he said.

“It was wonderful to have our great city on show to host the function. Having the honour of winning the overall State award last year and taking home five impressive accolades again this year is a testament to our community’s continual commitment to maintaining a clean, engaged and sustainable city.”

The Council also extended its congratulations to all of this year’s award winners, in particular to its Central West neighbour, Parkes, as the 2024 Overall Winner.
