Bass Coast Shire Council has announced it will host a series of community engagement sessions for the development of its Integrated Transport Strategy (ITS).
The purpose of this strategy is to make getting around Bass Coast safer, more sustainable, and more enjoyable for everyone, Council said in a statement.
Bass Coast Mayor, Clare Le Serve said the Integrated Transport Strategy will address the growing need for a more user-focused set of alternatives to car use, including walking, cycling, and public transport.
“By managing car use more effectively, we can enhance the vibrancy of our townships and improve our streetscapes, making our communities more livable and dynamic,” the Mayor said.
“We are committed to developing an integrated transport strategy that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of our community… to identify improvements in our transport system to make it safer, more sustainable, and accessible for everyone in Bass Coast.”
The ITS will focus on enhancing safety for all road users, promoting sustainable transport options, improving walking and cycling infrastructure, expanding and enhancing public transport services, and revitalizing streetscapes and town centers.
Preliminary work on the strategy has revealed:
- More than 85% of trips to work that are under 5km are made by car;
- Walking and cycling are two of the most popular recreational activities in Bass Coast, yet only 5% of people walk and only 1% ride to work;
- Our public transport network is limited, making it hard to get around Bass Coast without a car;
- Our population is ageing, with a median age of 51;
- 85% of people who work in Bass Coast also live here;
- There is an increase in demand for emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and e-bikes to get around;
- Currently, 9-in-10 people travel to work by car;
- Bass Coast is predicted to have 17% growth by 2036.
The Council said that to ensure that the ITS reflects the local community’s diverse perspectives, it will seek input and feedback via the Engage Bass Coast website and in-person engagement sessions.
Pop up sessions will be held at: Wonthaggi (Library) Friday 16 August,10am to 12noon; San Remo (outside IGA) Friday 16 August, 2pm to 4pm; and Cowes (Berninneit) Saturday 17 August, 10am to 12noon.
