Armidale solar project lights up active transport network

Armidale Regional Council has completed Stage 2 and 3 upgrades to solar lighting along the city’s popular bike track network, enhancing safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians alike.

Funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund – Round 5, the Stage 2 upgrade has extended lighting from the University of New England (UNE) to Markham Street, significantly improving visibility and safety along the key active transport corridor.

Thanks to cost savings achieved during Stage 2, Council says it was able to install an additional seven solar lights along the bike track dissecting Elizabeth Park, further expanding the reach and impact of the infrastructure upgrade.

Stage 3 continues the momentum, delivering lighting enhancements that support the community’s growing use of Armidale’s active transport networks and align with Council’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and public safety.

Mayor, Sam Coupland said he was pleased with the delivery of the project, highlighting the collaborative efforts between Council and the community.

“This project is a shining example of how smart investment and community-focused planning can deliver safer, more sustainable infrastructure for Armidale,” he said.

“We’re especially grateful to neighbourhood watch member Kate Clare, whose proactive approach in raising this safety concern with Council helped spark the improvements we see today. Her advocacy is a great example of how local voices can lead to meaningful change.”
