Algae alert downgraded for Lake Wyangan

Griffith City Council has advised Lake Wyangan (North Lake) has been downgraded from a red to an amber alert for blue-green algae, following recent water quality monitoring.

The Council says follow-up testing shows a significant reduction in blue-green algae concentrations. A sample collected on 10 April recorded a level of 8.0983 mm3/L, which has since decreased to 1.8237 mm3/L as per the most recent sample taken on 28 April.

An amber alert indicates that blue-green algae may still be present and multiplying. While the water is considered suitable for recreational use, users are urged to exercise caution. The water may appear green or emit a musty or organic odour, and contact with visible blooms should be avoided, Council said in a statement.

“At this alert level, the water remains unsuitable for potable use. Residents and landholders should seek alternative water supplies or ensure raw water is appropriately treated before any domestic use. The water may also be unsuitable for stock watering,” the Council said.

In addition to the improved algal readings, Council can confirm that Faecal Coliforms and Enterococci levels have now reduced to ‘Low’. This is a positive development and reflects an overall improvement in water quality at North Lake, Council stated.

“Council continues to monitor conditions closely and will keep the community informed of any further changes. Algal levels can fluctuate rapidly depending on weather and environmental conditions.”
