Albury Council backs Gold Cup public holiday application

Albury City Council is moving to secure the future of the Albury Gold Cup public holiday, confirming it will apply to the NSW Premier’s Department for a full-day public holiday for the 2026 and 2027 racing events.

While Council’s primary preference remains for a full-day public holiday following strong community and business support through recent consultation, it will also seek approval for a half-day holiday as an alternative in order to protect the tradition of the Gold Cup holiday.

The Council has supported a half-day public holiday since 1998, with the public holiday contributing significantly to the success of the event over that time. However, it says feedback has increasingly highlighted the confusion and disruption caused by the current half-day arrangement, with many calling for a shift to a clearer, full-day approach.

Community and business consultation was carried out in March and April this year. A total of 889 online surveys were completed, along with 390 written comments and one formal submission.

Community consultation confirmed:

  • 77% of respondents support Council applying for a public holiday;
  • 69% of the general public favour a full-day holiday, compared to 9% for a half-day;
  • Among businesses, 49% support a full-day break, while 15% prefer a half-day.

The Council says it will seek approval for both 2026 and 2027 to provide certainty for organisers, businesses and the wider community.

“The Albury Gold Cup is one of our most significant events, bringing together locals and visitors alike. While we’re firmly seeking a full-day public holiday, applying for both options ensures we retain the connection between this major event and our city’s official calendar,” said Mayor, Kevin Mack.

“The backup application for a half-day recognises the long-standing tradition, but we believe a full day offers greater benefits for businesses, workers, schools and event organisers.”

The Albury Racing Club has confirmed the 2026 Gold Cup will be held on Friday 20 March, with 19 March tentatively set for 2027.

Council’s formal application must be submitted to the Premier’s Department by November 2025.

Approval of a public holiday is not guaranteed. The final decision rests with the NSW Premier’s Department.
