City of Busselton hits home run with new trainee

Western Australia’s City of Busselton Council has welcomed its newest Youth Services Team member, who is ready to hit it out of the park in his new role.

Darcey Pes, who is also a WA softball champion, has joined the Council’s Youth Services team. Earlier this year, Darcey was one of just two WA athletes selected in the 2025 Softball Australia U-18 Men’s ‘Junior Steelers’ Squad

He joins a team known for hosting the epic Battle of the Bands,  the empowering Girls to the Front skate event and the lively South West Youth Festival.

“With Darcey coming on board, this is a wonderful opportunity  to bring a fresh perspective and youthful energy to the Youth Services team. Each trainee adds their  unique flair, keeping the City in tune with youth culture, the latest trends and solutions to barriers,” said City of Busselton Mayor, Phill Cronin.

“We sincerely thank Rio Tinto for their ongoing commitment to regional youth through the MOU they  have in place with the City. Each year, Rio Tinto invests $80,000 into youth initiatives, both in Busselton  and Dunsborough, and have proudly supported the youth trainee position since 2014.”

Rio Tinto Iron Ore Health, Safety, Environment and Communities General Manager, Mark Townson said the company believes that helping young people to reach their full potential is key to building thriving communities.

“Our long-standing partnership with the City of Busselton provides young people like Darcey with the  chance to kick-start their careers and make a positive difference in the local community where they live,” he said.
