Gallery anniversary celebrations shine a light on Logan

Images from Logan Art Gallery’s collection are set to be brought to life through a night-time lighting spectacular to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The images will be projected on the front of the gallery on Friday, 18 July and Saturday, 19 July as Logan City Council marks three decades of presenting art to the community.

The gallery opened in Logan Central in 1995 as a community-based initiative to provide a dedicated space to showcase local artistic talent. The building had previously been home to the local library but has since shared the diverse practices of visual artists, craft workers and designers.

Mayor, Jon Raven said Logan Art Gallery had cemented itself as a hub of creativity in the City of Logan over the past 30 years.

“Our gallery has exciting art on display, showcasing the best of local and touring artists,” Mayor Raven said

“We’ve also built up an amazing permanent collection that reflects the diversity of Logan.”

Mayor Raven said Council’s commitment to culturally-focused programs had been recognised by six Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards over the years.

“Last year we hosted a major exhibition from the Art Gallery of New South Wales focused on one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, Brett Whiteley,” he said.

“We were the only Queensland gallery – and one of only four fin Australia – to host this exhibition.”

The 30th Anniversary Spectacular is happening from 5pm to 8pm on the Friday and between 10am and 8pm on the Saturday featuring a full program of creative activities for people of all ages, and especially families.

Friday’s program celebrates the opening of five new exhibitions, the spectacular outdoor projection, and courtyard light installation with lantern and bead making workshops available for the kids.

Saturday’s program will offer hands-on opportunities for participants including workshops in lantern making, tote bag printing, Love Logan canvas painting, snow globes and kaleidoscopes.

The next series of gallery exhibitions featuring Ex libris (from the library of) by Christina Lowry, The Piano keys of humanity by Wu Zhipeng and Love Logan will open on the Friday night alongside the light show and run until Saturday, 6 September.

Logan Art Gallery is on the corner of Jacaranda Avenue and Wembley Rd, Logan Central.

It is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 5pm.
