A Northern Territory company has been awarded a $3.6 million contract to build eight homes across Darwin’s northern suburbs, in the first tranche of the Federal Government’s $50 million urban housing investment.
C&R Constructions will build one and two bedroom homes in Tiwi, Wanguri, and Rapid Creek, with the contract inclusive of civil and ancillary works.
The Commonwealth Government-funded Social Housing Accelerator Payment (SHAP) project will yield up to 100 new homes over the next five years across Greater Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, and Alice Springs; boosting available housing, job creation, and economic growth.
In the Northern Territory, $37.5 million in funding to be managed by the NT Government, and $12.5 million designated for Community Housing Providers (CHPs).
A Request for Proposals encourages the use of land already owned by CHPs or, where appropriate, privately owned land developed in partnership with CHPs for new social housing developments that foster partnerships, increase housing density and address broader regional needs, the NT Government said in a statement.
A key focus of the program is community wellbeing, so new homes will be built to suit local climates, and enhance comfort and sustainability for tenants, it said.
“We know that safe and secure housing is central to the security and dignity of all Australians,” said Minister for Urban Housing, Ngaree Ah Kit.
“This additional investment, which will increase our social housing stock, is a direct outcome of the Territory Labor Government working closely with the Federal Government.
“This initiative not only boosts housing supply, and supports further planning and zoning reforms, it also stimulates job creation and economic growth, both through the construction phase and the ongoing management of housing precincts.”
