A $3.3 million transformation of Melrose Football Club’s fire-destroyed facilities is proving a game-changer for players, volunteers and the broader community.
A purpose-built sports pavilion has replaced makeshift shipping containers which served as temporary facilities after a 2021 fire destroyed the original Lavington clubhouse.
The project, jointly funded by AlburyCity, the NSW Government and the Melrose Football Club, includes dedicated male and female change rooms for players and referees, accessible amenities, modern storage, and a community hub with a fully equipped canteen.
Club Vice-President, Josh Fluss said the upgrade had addressed long-standing infrastructure needs for the club.
“The new facility provides a professional environment for players, which can boost morale and performance. The dedicated change rooms, canteen and conference room offer a comfortable space for teams to prep, refuel and strategise. To have these facilities now is like a breath of fresh air,” Mr Fluss said.
“It has attracted new players, improved team cohesion and enhanced the overall experience at Melrose FC. Our member numbers are greatly up on previous years across all grades. We hope to see a bigger increase in 2026 as we grow further, thanks to the NSW Government and Albury City Council.”
Albury Deputy Mayor, Jessica Kellahan said the transformation was a major win for local sport.
“It’s now a space that supports a diverse range of players, volunteers and families, and reflects the club’s importance to the local community,” Mayor Kellahan said.
The project received $257,000 from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities program and an additional $350,000 as part of a state election commitment to female-friendly facilities, with the majority of funding provided by the Council together with a contribution from the club.
Member for Albury, Justin Clancy said the upgrade delivered on calls for better and more inclusive facilities.
“It’s been a long journey for Melrose Football Club, but the result is something both the club and the broader community can be incredibly proud of,” Mr Clancy said.
“When I entered Parliament in 2019, I pushed for better sporting facilities with a strong focus on supporting the growing participation of girls and women in sport. I’m pleased that the funding secured back then helped spark the development of this fantastic new clubhouse, and I commend everyone whose hard work and commitment brought it to life.”
Construction was delivered by local firm Premier Building Construction Pty Ltd (PBC), following community consultation in 2021 and a subsequent tender process.
