$15m win for Benalla sports centre

Benalla Rural City Council has welcomed a $15 million funding announcement from the Victorian Government to upgrade the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre (BIRC).

Northern Victoria MP, Jaclyn Symes, visited Benalla this morning to make the announcement as part of the state’s Budget 2023.

She said the funding would help to rebuild the centre, including a better stadium, new amenities, and female-friendly change rooms.

Mayor, Bernie Hearn welcomed the funding announcement.

“This will make Benalla one of the best sporting areas in the north-east,” Mayor Hearn said.

“The new stadium will cater for a range of sports. We also have a top equestrian centre right next to our exceptional racecourse.

“We have two great football clubs in town. We have excellent cricket facilities and our tennis courts are amazing. People will be able to come here for just about any sport.”

Mayor Hearn said council had been campaigning for funding for the BIRC for a long time.

She said Council had continued to support the committee and volunteers to advocate for funding to redevelop the important community asset.
